1) The 5 Key Success Areas

Ever had that feeling that you’ve got 1000 problems to deal with?  Well dividing your organisation into just 5 key areas can help you group those problems, focus and simplify them.

1) Leadership & Organisation (what is the atmosphere like how smooth is the operation)

2) Membership & Promotion (how full are you?)

3) Volunteers (do you have enough?)

4) Money (do you have enough J?)

5) Performance on Court (are you as good as you could be?)

Note – Performance on Court includes:

a) Facilities & Resources (quality and ease of access to a facility)

b) Coaching & Development (quality and degree of training)

c) Competitions & Officials (competition that encourages people at all levels)

This matches the 7 (i.e. 1 to 4 plus 5a, 5b and 5c) menus in the volunteer tool kit.

2) Managing Performance Constraints

No matter how successful or unsuccessful you are you will have a constraint in one of these 5 areas – one area that is stopping you from growing or developing.  It will always be that way – as you remove one constraint you will grow until you hit another.  That fact is something that you share with every organisation in the World.

Under leadership you will also find an excel sheet that has an organisational health check which also covers these 7 areas.  Fill in the questions and you will get a graph that outlines your strengths – great if you want to check your strategy or for future planning.

Be aware that this is only a model and as with all models only reflects what is happening and must be tailored to suit your organisation.  Simple common sense is usually the best way to go..  If you can think of improvements to it or omissions feel free to let us know as it should be something which evolves to suit the environment not the other way round.  (cliff@badminton.org.nz or phone 021-676-231)

5) A Note To All Those Involved in Our Sport

And most of all to all of you out there involved in our sport as a player, sponsor, coach, court official, parent, volunteer, paid staff member etc who through small actions each day keep our sport going

Heroes come in many forms and we have many unsung heroes who, each day, get up and do the job to the best of their ability (even when they don’t feel like it) to support their family, their sport, or something they believe in.  If you know of someone like this take the time at least once a year to appreciate them in some way or just say “Thanks Heaps for Making a Difference”.
