How to Make a Simple Funding Plan

Finance Menu

Step 1)  Make a Projects List

List all the funding you want to apply for, when you need it by and the priority.  Note there is no standard priority it purely depends on what your goals and unique focus is.

Example:  Note Date Finish is when you have all receipts and can put in the accountability form to the trust accounting for the funds expenditure

Step 2)  List the Funding Agencies

A. Go to the Department of Internal Affairs Website – www.dia.govt.nz

B. Click on Community Grants Schemes – in orange

C. Click on Funding for Community Groups – underlined in orange.

D. Scroll down to the NZ map click on your region.

E. Click on the funding agency then on the arrow to list all the pubs they have – generally the more pubs the more money for the community in that region.

F. Check out their websites – google them and most have websites.  Read their application forms to

gauge their focus there is also information about this on the dia site.

G. Put down special notes – e.g. if used the trust recently, if tend to favour certain areas, maintenance, teams, coaching etc.

For example listed in order of size in a particular region – hypothetical example only

Trust                                       Special Notes

New Zealand Community Trust

Lion Foundation                                     Used last year but all funding accounted for

Southern Trust

Pub Charity

Scottwood

South Auckland Trust

Oxford Trust

Trusts Charitable Foundation

Century Foundation

Step 3) Match the Agencies to your Projects

A.     Fill in the high priority urgent projects first in order of size of funds needed with back ups

B.     Fill in the high priority cheaper items second

C.     Fill in the lower priority expensive items

D.     Match up the rest – lower priority and cheaper items

E.     Check if all is covered

F.      If not – here are some strategies to use

a.    Can you revisit a trust – e.g. if you go to a large trust for an early project that finished quickly  e.g. shuttle purchases can you then revisit that trust later to cover any gaps in the plan

b.    Are there smaller local trusts you have not considered

c.    Can you break the project up to allow you to use smaller trusts

d.    Can you group  projects together to reduce the number of applications

e.    Send a note with the application to trust you are using explaining you still have an outstanding project with them

f.       Can you remove some of the projects or fund by other means – e.g. fundraising etc.

Things to consider when matching

1) Capability – given the size of the trust to be able to fund the project

2) Whether you can finish the project and re apply to the same trust later in that year

3) Likely success with the trust  e.g. track record whether recently funded you etc.

4) What the trust tends to focus on

5) Urgency of the Application

6) Whether you currently have funding from the trust still to be spent or accounted for to them

Strategy Notes:

1) Scottwood - only 1 application / year so have grouped two together to make it larger

2) If Southern needed for Maintenance and Shuttles will finish by March so can still use for 1st May Junior trip app

3) Either South Auckland or Century will be free for the Clubs in Schools program.

4) If Lion not needed for Dev Officer use for Junrs & Masters, if is use Pub Charity as finishes in April before May date
