Player Points have changed for 2009

Last updated   3 April 2009

The previous way of showing player points has changed.

3 April 2009:  Following queries about players moving up to a higher category and not appearing on the list, it was decided to bring forward 67% (2 / 3 rds) of all last year’s results.

All ‘new’ players (those who have moved up to a higher category this year) will include 67% of all results from the previous category from last year. (even if they already have results in their ‘new’ category from last year)

In the Player Points reports all ‘new’ players have an asterisk - *  after their name

In the Player Points – By Player reports which shows the points awarded for each event – points that are 67% show an asterisk - *

There will now be 4 separate lists:           Click here to view 2009 Player Points lists

Categories:

~ Seniors         for points earned in Oceania Internationals and Open Tournaments only

~ Under 19s      for points earned in Under 19 Tournaments only

~ Under 17s      for points earned in Under 17 Tournaments only

~ Under 15s      for points earned in Under 15 Tournaments only

A player who plays in more than 1 category (Under 19s and Seniors) will now have a entry in 2 lists and the points from both are no longer combined.

NB:  Some players will not show on any list if we do not have their date of birth.  When they play in a tournament this year, then they will get that category’s age assigned to them and they will then appear on the lists.  – click here for a list of players that we do not have a DOB for.

Points are now the best 4 Averaged:

In the previous best 6 summed format, top players who did not play enough tournaments, did not get to be listed fairly
(This was particularly true for Seniors who did not have 6 Open tournaments to compete in)

Also, with the best 6 summed format, the points earned from a ‘poor’ result were added to the existing total – which still helped to push the total up until after 6 tournaments this ‘poor’ result could be ‘dropped’.

With the best 4 averaged, a ‘poor’ result counts against a player – as this will drag the average down – until they have played more than 4 and can ‘drop’ this result.  Therefore, players are encouraged to play more tournaments in their own category to ensure that they get a higher average.

Seeding:

Seeding for all tournaments will be done from the same category player points list

e.g.   The Hutt Valley Under 17s is to be seeded from the Under 17s Player Points list only.

Except for :

~ International events will be seeded from BWF (International) points – they will not use these lists at all

~ North & South Island Junior Championships and NZ Junior Championships   (for Under 19s, 17s & 15s)
Where top players do not appear in the category player list (because they have played in higher categories)
a National seeding committee  will determine the appropriate seed (if any) that the top player should get
NB  This seeding committee is not made up of selectors to judicate on players ability but rather to determine the relative seeding based on that player’s position(s) in higher category player points lists.
The maximum number of ‘top’ players that can be considered by the seeding committee are:
1 – where only 4 entries are seeded
2 – where 8 entries are seeded
4 – where 16 entries are seeded
